Together, passion flows.
Formation flying is used in a range of scenarios including flying displays and air-to-air photography. Learning the skills and techniques to master formation flying is an exciting challenge, and the thrill of flying up close and personal with another aircraft right next to you is an experience that puts a big smile on the face of even the most seasoned pilots. Whether you are leading the flight or flying as a wingman, formation flying is an experience like no other.
This Formation Flying Endorsement course will teach you the necessary ground theory required to plan, brief and fly a safe formation sortie with 2 or more aircraft. The course teaches you how to maintain and change position in the formation, break and re-joining procedures, as well as formation takeoff and landings. You will master flying as a wingman in Echelon, Line-Astern and Line-Abreast positions whilst the formation manoeuvres as one. This course needs to be completed with at least 1 other student, due to the requirement of at least 2 aircraft for the practical flight training components. We can help to coordinate this for you.
To complete the Formation Flying Endorsement course you need to hold a valid RPL, PPL or CPL. Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet, LTF processes and policies, and our facilities.
Your ground-based theory component includes detailed briefings on formation terminology, aircraft positioning, types of turns, and techniques to change station within the formation. You will also look at the regulatory considerations for formation flying.
In the first practical lesson you will learn to keep the station in the Line Astern, Echelon Left, Echelon Right, and Line Abreast positions as well as the group turns, climbs and descents whilst in each position. You will also perform a Stream Takeoff and Stream Landing
In the second lesson, you will learn to change positions within the formation (including Break and Rejoin procedures), and you will practice leading the formation yourself. In this lesson, you will perform a Pairs Takeoff and Pairs Landing
Check flight with an instructor where you will demonstrate your performance of all manoeuvres learnt and trained during ground theory and practical flight training

Our Graduate
Joshua Best“Formation flying is all about making small and precise changes and requires lots of concentration. This means that completing a Formation Flying Endorsement is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to really finesse your flying. Learning how to fly in formation and then actually lead the formation yourself is a lot of fun and an exciting experience even for highly experienced pilots. Learn To Fly’s Formation Flying Endorsement course allows you to choose between the Sling 2 and Diamond DA40 aircraft and is led by a pilot with some serious flying experience in Laurie Byrnes.“
